Physique Drug Testing Update 1 June 2006
The Federation of Gay Games' principle of "personal best" encourages individuals to participate at their own level of skill without the use of performance enhancing drugs. The Federation of Gay Games and Chicago Games, Inc., condemn doping practices and the use of banned substances to enhance performance in sport. The use of such banned substances is contrary to fair play, is potentially harmful to the health of athletes, is an increased safety risk and is, in some cases, unlawful.

The FGG also understands that because the Gay Games includes all athletes based on the ideals of inclusion and participation, many of them participate under special circumstances (asthma, cancer, diabetes, HIV, etc.). The FGG recognizes that there are medical conditions for which there is the prescribed use of some banned substances and acknowledges a broad range of legitimate medical reasons that would cause an athlete to be on substances banned and often stigmatized. The FGG encourages participation, inclusion, and personal best whenever it is not in direct opposition to liability and safety factors for the participants.

For Physique, The FGG has set up three categories or tiers under which participants may compete. Each participant in Physique must choose one of the following three categories:
  1. Physique competitors in the 'Standard' (which is the Tested or Natural) category will give a testing sample for drug testing. The sample may be used to test for substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. (The exact panel of prohibited substances can be found on The World Anti-Doping Agency's website.) Competitors in this category cannot use any banned substance, regardless of whether it is prescribed by a physician. No competitor in the Standard category may use a doctor's statement or a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).
  2. Physique competitors in the 'Modified' (which is the UnTested) category will not be tested. Competitors in this category may give a testing sample if the competitor chooses for confidentiality purposes, but the sample will not be tested.
  3. The 'Guest Competitor', also will not be tested. Guest Competitors will be judged along with all the other competitors. Their placement will be announced in the final evening presentation. The category is for those who prefer not to document their results for confidentiality purposes. This category is not eligible for a gold, silver or bronze medal. As all other athletes, they will receive a participation medal.

The three tiered competition for Physique has been adopted to ensure that drug control policies are meaningful, fair, confidential, and non-discriminatory. Individual Physique competitors are the only ones to know which category they are competing within. The other Physique competitors, the judges, and public will not know until the final night when results are announced. The judges will score ALL categories of competitors AS A SINGLE CATEGORY based upon the SAME criteria. Ranking will be determined based upon the Gay Games Physique 'RedBook' guidelines. The two lists of preliminary winners for the 'Standard' and the 'Modified' categories will be created by the tournament director/staff from the final single ranking of the judges.

Medals
Being associated with one category or another will be avoided by insuring confidentiality throughout the event, using the same judging criteria, a single judging pool, and then awarding two sets of medals for each category. The Gay Games will award a separate set of gold, silver, and bronze medals in both the 'Standard' and the 'Modified' categories for each age/weight division. The actual gold, silver, and bronze medals will be securely mailed to the winners of both the 'Standard' and the 'Modified' categories once the drug testing results for the 'Standard' categories are resolved and confirmed.

Competitors in either category who are deemed to have violated this policy shall have their results kept confidential within the FGG.
