Dave Kopay becomes Gay Games Ambassador
First professional athlete to declare homosexuality
Gay athletic legend Dave Kopay is excited
about becoming a permanent Gay Games Ambassador.
The
former pro-football player came out in 1975 with a closet-busting
interview in the Washington Star. Two years later, he co-authored
"The Dave Kopay Story" with Perry Deane Young,
a book that topped the "New York Times" bestseller
list for weeks and is still so popular it will soon see
its fifth printing. He has been an outspoken advocate for
gay rights ever since.
Kopay
first participated at the Gay Games at New York's Gay Games
IV in 1994, presenting the athletes' oath during the opening
ceremony and serving as a judge in the physique competition.
"I'm
excited...because I've seen first-hand how the Gay Games
experience changes lives," Kopay said. More

world famous Dinah Shore Weekend 24-27 March 2005! Every year,
over 20,000 women travel to this California desert city for

a team of Southern California volunteers plus 3 women from
Chicago as part of our commitment to bringing more women to
Gay Games VII than ever before.
For
those who have always wanted to be on television, this was
a great chance to be a star! Q Television held open casting
calls for anyone interested in auditioning for a Gay Games
VII television commercial or to be an official Q Television
On-Air Personality during Gay Games VII. Gay Games VII/Q Television
booths were seen at the Doral, Riviera and Palm Mountain Resort
pool parties. Sunday found us at the big Splash Pool Party
at the Riviera Resort. All weekend long people were approached
for on-the-spot auditions by roving Q Television camera crews
while Gay Games athletes were featured on live Q Television
interviews.

Thank
You, Sydney!
Almost
500,000 people witnessed this year’s Sydney Gay and
Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade and some of the loudest cheers were
reserved for the entry from Gay Games Chicago, led by one
of Sydney’s most popular personalities, Miss Dollywood.
Marching
with the rest of Sydney’s sports organizations, and
surrounded by some very sexy Sydney bodybuilders carrying
Gay Games signs, Miss Dolly Wood strolled down the parade
route proudly wearing the rainbow-colored gown she wore in
the Closing Ceremony at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Miss
Dolly Wood was a tremendous ambassador for Chicago and the
Gay Games – even with several delays for television
interviews and official photo ops. When not performing, Miss
Dolly Wood is Steve Bailey, a member of the Sydney Frontrunners
and an avid supporter of the Gay Games. A silver medalist
at the Sydney 2002 Gay Games, Steve has already registered
for Gay Games VII in Chicago.
The Mardi Gras Season stretched from February 4 to March 6
and the Gay Games was visible from start to finish. Chicago
Co-Chair Suzi Arnold traveled to Sydney and spoke to a group
of nearly 50 athletes on 19 February while hundreds stopped
by the Gay Games booth at Fair Day on 20 February. Chicago
Vice Co-Chair Kevin Boyer traveled to Sydney and represented
Chicago during the Mardi Gras parade weekend.
Chicago extends a big thank you to our friends and International
Partners at New Mardi
Gras, especially Craig Abberfield and New Mardi Gras co-chairs
Mark Orr and Steph Sands. Support from the Sydney Frontrunners
and Team Sydney was amply augmented by great coverage from
the Sydney Star Observer and SX News, Sydney’s
most prominent LGBT media. We’re also pleased to announce
a brand new media sponsor – Sydney-based AKA Entertainment,
publisher of GuideToGay.com
with city guides to some of Australia’s most sensational
cities – and two brand new partners, Team
Sydney and the Sydney
Frontrunners. Our Sydney efforts wouldn’t have been
successful without the tireless efforts of the four Sydneysiders
who helped us plan and implement a month’s worth of
activities – Richard Hogan, Kate Rowe, Wayne Morgan
and Des Sullivan. A big thanks to them, and to everyone in
Sydney who welcomed us with open arms! See you at Mardi Gras
2006! |
