The Figure Skating event will include all of the traditional disciplines such as men’s and women’s singles events, male/female pairs, and dance events. Additionally, the Gay Games VII will include the unique event of same-sex pairs and dance events, which have garnered great interest and support in the previous Gay Games.

Offering a winter sport during a summer festival initially didn't make sense to the organizers of Gay Games IV. But Laura Moore and Arthur Luiz, who founded the International Gay Figure Skating Union (IGFSU) in 1991, helped them see the potential. Waivers were secured from governing bodies in the USA and Canada and advertisements were placed in skating publications calling for athletes. The resulting groundbreaking competition held in New York in 1994 drew in 92 skaters from 7 different countries and highlighted rare same-gender partner events.

In a devastating blow 4 years later, the figure skating competition at Gay Games V was turned into a "public practice" when it was revealed that the Amsterdam organizing committee had failed to obtain an appropriate sanction. The surge in popularity of big money figure skating events following the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding incident during the Lillehammer Winter Olympics motivated the ISU to take greater financial control of skating events. Waivers such as those issued to GGIV were no longer possible.

Bradley Erickson, a disappointed skater who had learned to skate specifically for GGV, was instrumental in steering IGFSU to become member organization of Ice Skating Institute (ISI), a recreational governing body for figure skating. This allowed Gay Games VI Sydney 2002 to become the first fully sanctioned international gay figure skating competition.

Gay Games VII Chicago 2006 hosts an international array of skaters representing a wide range of ages and ability levels but united by their passion for the sport. Many are Gay Games veterans, but others are participating for the first time, enjoying the unique experience that only the Games provide.
Rudy Galindo, Skating Champion,
Joins Gay Games Ambassadors

2004-11-03

(NEW YORK - 1 November 2004) — Jumping, gliding, spinning at the chance — however you want to describe it in skating terms, Rudy Galindo is thrilled to join the Gay Games Ambassadors in support of the quadrennial LGBT sports event, now more than 20 years old.

Galindo will also serve as Honorary Figure Skating Chair for Chicago's Gay Games VII, taking place from 15-22 July 2006.

"I've heard about the Gay Games for years and cannot wait to be part of my first one in Chicago" Galindo said. "So much of what the Gay Games promotes about being out and open in the sports world is exactly how I have lived my amateur and professional skating career."
