Arts Festival EventJoe Conlon 101 Talismans for a Happy Death
HostAron Packer Gallery
Time11 am - 6 pm
LocationAron Packer Gallery
Address118 N Peoria Chicago IL
Event DescriptionFriday, July 14 6 - 9 PM opening reception

The late Chicago Artist Joseph Conlon’s series “101 Talismans for a happy death” will be on display at Aron Packer Gallery. Conlon, who was HIV positive for over 20 years, created the work in the last five years of his life and passed away in 2005.

The word Talismans is defined as an amulet or charm; anything with almost magical power. With this idea in mind, 101 Talismans for a Happy Death can be viewed as the artists attempt to confront mortality using the talisman of his art. The 101 reference in the talismans project was inspired by the Japanese story of 1000 cranes about the story of the girl in Hiroshima, Japan who thought if she could fold 1000 paper cranes it would free her from the suffering brought to her by the Atomic Bomb.

Sound also plays into Conlon’s representation of death. The video images are accompanied by an abstract soundscape by Sally Station. The soundtrack compels you to breathe deeply and rhythmically. The measured soundtrack and repeated visuals suggest something more than the distancing of trauma-they suggest an acceptance of meditation on the cycle of life and death.

Choral EventClassical Monday Lunchbreak: San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus
HostChicago Department of Cultural Affairs
Time12 pm - 1 pm
LocationPreston Bradley Hall, Chicago Cultural Center
Address78 East Washington St, Chicago
Event DescriptionEVENT TIME: 12:15pm

Members of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus (SFGMC) will present select movements from its ground-breaking 1996 commission NakedMan by poet Philip Littell and composer Robert Seeley.

This year marks the work’s tenth anniversary.

NakedMan - a song cycle - was the first musical work of its kind to highlight various aspects of gay culture. Its eclectic styles - from contemporary art-music to doo-wop and spiritual - are as diverse as the Chorus’s full complement of 200 members.

SFGMC’s Artistic Director and Conductor, Dr. Kathleen McGuire, said NakedMan "presents a snapshot of mid-1990s American culture, yet many of the topics presented, such as marriage, family and AIDS, are just as relevant today as they were then. We hope that many will come and hear this powerful, uplifting and poignant program.”
