Chicago Adds Badminton League
|
Local Sports Organization Funds Development in Advance of Gay Games VII 2004-11-18
CHICAGO – Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association is adding a new sport to its already exciting line-up of gay and lesbian sports. Starting in January Badminton will be offered by CMSA. The new league will play its inaugural season at Evanston Township High School. The Badminton league is open to both women and men and will offer two levels of competition. The first season of play will be doubles with plans to play singles and mixed doubles in future seasons.
In preparation for Gay Games VII, coming to Chicago in July of 2006, it was decided to put together a league that would educate gay Chicagoans to the game of badminton. The intent is to create a league built on friendship and competition that will hopefully inspire local athletes to participate in the Gay Games Badminton Tournament. The Games will attract badminton players from countries worldwide. “Badminton is a popular sport in Asia and Europe and there are a few Canadian leagues, but ours will be the first gay badminton league in the United States,” says league organizer Mark Febonio.
A sign-up party for the inaugural season will be held at the Crew Bar & Grill (4804 N. Broadway) on Thursday, December 9th, 6-9 p.m. Team registration is $150 per doubles team. Individuals that do not have a doubles partner are encouraged to attend and will be matched up with a team seeking players. No equipment needed for the newcomer to this fast and challenging sport. The league will have racquets available for a small rental fee.
