ROWING
UPDATE
Dear
GGVII Rowing Participant –
As
you may have read, the process to obtain all
the required municipal approvals for the rowing
regatta on Crystal Lake took
a bit of work. WE are thrilled to announce that
ALL of the approvals needed have been secured
and the Gay Games Regatta will
take place Sunday, 16 July on this US Rowing
Association recommended lake. This beautiful
northwest suburb of Chicago is an ideal location
for the rowing regatta with clear, calm waters,
an experienced local rowing club and excellent
staging and spectator areas. Just this month,
this was the site of the very successful Greater
Chicago Junior Rowing Championships regatta with
over 300 rowers.
Located
just 50 miles northwest of Chicago, Crystal
Lake is accessible
by public transportation (METRA)
and shuttles will be provided on the day of the
event to take participants and spectators to
and from the venue. We appreciate your patience
and continued support as we worked through the
process of securing this venue which promises
the best possible experience for you as a rower.
The support of many, MANY residents of the City
of Crystal Lake and the Village Lakewood will
ensure that your experience is first-rate. We
look forward to seeing you 15 – 22 July
for Gay Games VII.
Should
you have any additional questions, please do
not hesitate to e-mail us at rowing@gaygameschicago.org.
Look
for an announcement soon regarding an exciting
opportunity to row on the Chicago River in beautiful
downtown Chicago!

Rowing
At A Glance:
Chicago-area
rowers are poised to welcome the world to Gay
Games VII. Rowing is very popular in the Chicago
area, with the area boasting more than a dozen
area clubs, the oldest dating back to 1910, with
over 500 members. Chicago's rowing community
enjoys both the fierce competition and the unequalled
serenity integral to this grand sport. The Gay
Games VII rowing will take place on beautiful
Crystal Lake and will be comprised of four categories
and five levels of competition. Rowing Sweep & Sculling
will allow all participants to enroll in two
events each. Adaptive rowing for physically challenged
individuals is also available.

About
Chicago
Chicago
has many nicknames, including "The Windy
City" and "The Second City." We’ll
admit to an occasional gust of wind, but there’s
nothing second-echelon about Our Town. A center
for commerce and trade, Chicago offers its residents
and visitors a wide variety of museums, galleries,
and theaters; historic architecture; public and
performing arts; recreation and sports (how about
a hand for those World Series champs, the Chicago
White Sox?); Two Chicago landmarks will serve
as host to the Opening & Closing Ceremonies
of Gay Games VII: Soldier Field & Wrigley
Field, respectively. Chicago is also home to
one of the most beautiful lakefronts you’ll
ever see; some of the finest restaurants in the
world; and an international reputation for tolerance
and diversity. To invoke another Chi-Town nickname,
we truly are "The City That Works."
