Excerpts From IGLA Release - LONDON - 17 October 2004 - At its annual general meeting of team representatives held 6 October 2004, International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA) voted to continue its close relationship with the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) and rejected a proposal to join the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association (GLISA).

IGLA's annual general meeting took place the day before the start of IGLA's 14th Championships, hosted this year by the Miami Nadadores and held at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatics Center and International Swimming Hall of Fame complex in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.

The discussion regarding GLISA came during a motion by a delegate from A Contre Courant, IGLA's member team in Montreal, that IGLA join GLISA. The motion was defeated.

IGLA currently has 70 member swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polo teams from 17 countries. Among IGLA's member teams are groups from Chicago and Montreal.

The general membership ratified the IGLA board's statement of continued support of all IGLA teams, especially those in Chicago and Montreal, but not to depart from IGLA's longstanding mission to ensure excellence in aquatics at Gay Games competitions and annual IGLA Championships.

IGLA suspends its annual championships during Gay Games years and recognises marks set at the Gay Games by IGLA team members as official IGLA records.

During discussion of the motion, team representatives cited numerous reasons to support the FGG and the Gay Games in Chicago, including: IGLA's historical tie to the Gay Games, with IGLA's beginnings traced to a meeting of swimming team leaders at Gay Games II; the Gay Games' respected legacy not only within the LGBT community but the world at large; and a wish to keep IGLA's membership focused on aquatics and the Gay Games.

In addition, elections were held this year for two Co-Chair positions, the Secretary, and two delegates to the Federation of Gay Games. The 2004-05 IGLA board is:

Co-Presidents: Sean Fitzgerald (Atlanta) and Greg Spire (San Diego)
Co-Chairs: Bruce Hopson (St. Louis) and Erik Scollon (Long Beach)
Treasurer: Bernie LaFianza (West Hollywood)
Secretary: Chad Ozz (Chicago)
FGG Delegates: Jon Bauer (West Hollywood) and Neill Williams (Washington, D.C.)

Bauer returns to the IGLA board after having served as a Co-Chair and Co-President during the mid 1990's. Outgoing officers are Co-Presidents Ivan Bussens (London) and Doug Fadel (Salt Lake City), Secretary John Fay (Paris), and FGG Delegates Philip Hayman (West Hollywood) and Priscilla Kawakami (Salt Lake City).

The 2005 Championships return to the Olympic Pool in Atlanta, Georgia, site of the 1999 IGLA Championships. Atlanta organisers reported that planning is on track with extensive information already available on the Web at: www.igla2005.org.

Results of the 2004 IGLA Championships will be issued soon. For general information about IGLA, visit www.igla.org.
