Country Western Dancing? In The Gay Games?
|
2004-09-01
Country Western Dancing in its various forms has been part of the Gay Games since the very beginning of our movement.
Gay Games I – 1982 – San Francisco, CA
The Foggy City Squares group was featured in the very first segment of the very first Opening Ceremony. The group renamed itself Foggy City Dancers in 1983 and is currently a member of both the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs and the International Association of Gay and Lesbian Country & Western Dance Clubs.
Gay Games II - 1986 – San Francisco, CA
The Opening Ceremony featured the Barbary Coast Cloggers, the Saddletramps (a country/ western group founded in 1985), and the San Jose Spurs (another country/western dance group). The Closing Ceremony featured the Greater Bay Area Square Dancers and visiting members of the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs. The Procession of the Arts (the first cultural festival) showcased country/western and square dancing on Saturday night, August 16th, in a program called "Down Home Dancin'" at the Golden Gate YMCA.
Gay Games III – 1990 – Vancouver, British Columbia
The Opening Ceremony featured entertainment by both clog dancers, square dancers and line dancers. There was a night of country and western dancing at the Arlington Ballroom on August 2, listed and advertised in the program and other GG III promotional material.
Gay Games IV – 1994 – New York, NY
The Opening Ceremony featured country/western line dancers on both sides of the stadium performing to Garth Brooks' "We Shall Be Free." On June 23 at the Roseland Ballroom there was a night of country/western dance competition that was an official part of the cultural festival. Roseland is a classic venue in the middle of the theatre district and couldn't have been a more prominent location for this event.
Gay Games VII – 2006 – Chicago, IL
The Gay Games return to North American for the first time in 12 years and Country Western Dancing will be featured as part of the DanceSport competition, marking the first time that Country Western Dancers can win gold, silver or bronze Gay Games medals for the expertise and artistry. Stay tuned for more details as we work together with country western clubs and associations to ensure a great competition and fun event for dancers and spectators alike.
If you enjoy Country Western Dance, be sure and register to be part of Gay Games VII.
