The number of sports is limited at each Gay Games to ensure that the overall quality of the sports program is maintained and to ensure the financial viability of the host organization. The Core and Additional Sports in the Federation's sports program represent the efforts of LGBT sport organizations that have formed over the years, organized and promoted events in their particular sport and have worked with the Federation of Gay Games in lending their assistance and expertise in their sport on national and international levels.

Chicago selected its Additional Sports following a rigorous review of available excellent venues, tradition within the Gay Games movement, a sport’s appeal to a geographically diverse group of athletes, local planning expertise, local appeal, and our ability to run the tournament in a fiscally responsible manner. We also conducted a survey back in 2000 and 2001 to ask for input from worldwide athletes. After analyzing each of these factors, the eight additional sports – Beach Volleyball, DanceSport, Darts, Flag Football, Pool Billiards, Rowing, Rugby and Sailing – were added to the program with the Federation of Gay Games’ approval.

We recognize that for many people who play many of the world’s other great sports not included that this might be a disappointment. While we will not be adding any other sports to Gay Games VII, we offer the following suggestions to those of you who have a passion for another sport.

Adding Sports to Future Gay Games
To learn how a sport becomes a Gay Games Core Sport or an Official Additional Sport, visit the Sports section of the Gay Games website.

Playing Your Sport in Gay Games VII
We will not be adding any other sports to the official program at Gay Games VII, but you are welcome to plan a tournament to take place in Chicago at the same time as the Gay Games. This tournament would not result in Gay Games medals, but you could apply for a “license” to include the tournament as one of the allied/affiliated events taking place during Gay Games VII. This would allow you to promote the tournament to the thousands coming to Chicago for the Gay Games via our website and ticketing systems. The key is that you do the planning and organization yourself and our support will come in exchange for a license fee and/or a portion of ticket or registration fees offered through our ticketing agency. Email us at info@gaygameschicago.org if you have an organization or group that is interested in working on an affiliated event.

Participate in Another Sport or as a Fan
All of the sports at the Gay Games are open to anyone who chooses to participate, regardless of his or her level of expertise. We welcome you to participate in a sport that is new to you. If the idea of learning a new sport isn’t attractive to you, we hope that you will choose to come to Chicago in July of 2006 as a fan of sport and in support of our community and mission. Tickets to events will be on sale to the general public later in 2005.
