Travel By Road
Chicago is located in the middle of the United States and is a hub for
dozens of major expressway and highway systems. It is probably one of the
easiest cities to get to because every major national expressway connects
into the city either directly or through another branch. The Midwest and
Chicago are easy to access because you are basically driving across
farmlands and prairies to get to the city--there are no mountains or oceans,
just long, flat roads into the city.
Chicagoans like to refer to their expressways by name, but all of them are
numbered for your convenience on maps of the city of Chicago and state of
Illinois.
Interstate 80 runs across the United States, and provides a great route into
Chicago from most of the country. When nearing Chicago from the west on
I-80, take Interstate 55 (the Stevenson Expressway) into the city. From the
east, you would take I-90 north into the city. That merges into I-90/94, the
Dan Ryan Expressway.
Coming from the direct west, Interstate 290 (the Eisenhower Expressway)
provides direct access to downtown Chicago.
From the northwest, you can take the I-90, known at the Kennedy on the North
Side of the city. Coming directly north, you can take I-94, known as the
Edens once in the city.
There are many alternate roads and highways leading into the city, including
Illinois 41, Lake Shore Drive, which extends from northern Illinois and to
the southern end of the city. It is a beautiful, scenic drive.
Based on a simple grid format, and with extensive road access, Chicago is a
very easy city to get to by car, and, once here, it is an easy city to
navigate through. Get your map, check your oil, and get your friends
together for "Road Trip 2006."
