Every city has a story. In the tale of Chicago, the characters in the story embraced individuality, strived for innovation and built one the one of the great cities of the world. It all began just two centuries ago, but the story is far from finished.
Chicago's thumbprint is its skyline, a visual identity unique in the world.
Owing its one-of-a-kind cityscape to the devastating fire of 1871 supposedly caused by Mrs. O'Leary's cow (the poor bovine has since been exonerated), Chicago rose from the ashes to architectural acclaim. After introducing the world to the first skyscraper in 1885, Chicago has never looked back. The city is a veritable museum of modern architecture that has initiated international architectural styles and movements, and drawn students and masters from around the world to marvel at the masterpieces.
Though renowned as the birthplace of skyscrapers, Chicago is primarily a 'green' city, with over 500 citywide parks, and over 11,000 acres of open space devoted to recreation, leisure, and nature, and most recently named as the "best urban bicycling city." Thanks to a mayor devoted to trees and other forms of urban beauty, Chicago's environment gets better every year. 300,000 new trees have been planted in Chicago in the past 15 years!

Located in the heart of the North American Great Lakes region, Chicago sits on the banks of Lake Michigan, the fifth largest body of fresh water in the world. Thanks to early urban planners, most of Chicago's Lakefront is parkland, open to the public and easily accessible by foot, bike, car and mass transit. The Chicago Lakefront is an athlete's paradise with 29 miles of beaches and lakefront trails offering the perfect natural venues for volleyball, sailing, swimming, skating, biking, jogging, and dozens of other sports and activities. Adding to the lakefront beauty are thousands of acres of gorgeously landscaped city parks, perfect for lazy summer afternoons in the sun, or for a vigorous game of soccer or softball on fields well maintained by the Chicago Park District.
Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, rich in ethnic and cultural diversity. A true urban melting pot, with large populations of Latinos (19.6% of the city's population), African –Americans (38.6%), Asians (3.6%), Native Americans (.2%), Caucasians (37.9%), and vibrant communities from every country in the world. Chicago is a city that respects and values all of its citizens, a sense of the worth of humanity that extends all the way to Mayor Richard M. Daley, recently quoted as supporting gay marriage. Chicago is also a city that embraces and protects its culture and history with gusto, relishing every chance at public art, avant garde theatre, big-budget concerts, movies and musicals, and artists that may sing or speak to just a dozen people at a coffee shop or performance space.
Chicago's story is really the story of humanity, built by peoples from every land who moved or visited here and left their mark. Gay Games VII will be just the latest chapter in our city's story. In Chicago you will feel welcome; part of the family.
