Getting Around

Getting around Chicago is an easy and enjoyable experience for our visitors. Both of Chicago’s major airports, O’Hare International and Midway, are linked with the public transportation system, providing swift, inexpensive travel to downtown hotels and outlying neighborhoods. The Sports Villages and Gay Games Hub are all on major transportation lines, and the sophisticated network of trains and buses make it easy to get to just about anyplace in the city, from major tourist attractions to out-of the-way neighborhood treasures. Taxicabs are abundant with some of the lowest fares in any major city. Chicago is also extremely bike friendly. Recently named “Best Urban Biking City,” Chicago has more bike lanes than any other city of its size, and offers 29 miles of Lakefront bike trails that allow riders to quickly traverse the city. A state-of-the-art bicycle lock-up facility is located in Millennium Park in the Gay Games Hub.

CTA Services
The Chicago Transit Authority operates the second largest public transit system in the country. On an average weekday, approximately 1.5 million riders are taken on the CTA. The rapid transit system serves 144 stations on different lines. Most lines travel through the downtown Chicago area and free transfers are provided between the subway and the elevated system.

Metra Trains
Metra operates 12 commuter rail lines that connect approximately 230 outlying stations to Chicago from a six county area surrounding the City. There are also connections to Wisconsin on the Union Pacific North Line (Kenosha) and to Northwest Indiana (to South Bend) on the South Shore Line.

Taxi/Cab Services
Getting a taxicab is easy in Chicago. Taxicabs run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be hailed by stepping to the curb and waving your hand over your head. You can also pre-arrange a taxi pickup by calling any of the hundreds of taxicab companies in Chicago. If the sign on top of the taxicab is illuminated, it is available for hire.

Car
Chicago’s public transportation system should take care of most of your transportation needs, and make for an enjoyable and hassle-free visit. The Sports Villages and most major Gay Games activities are located on the rapid transit grid, so we encourage visitors to avoid the sometimes congested urban driving and parking experience, and opt for relaxed travel on public transportation.

Bicycle
Bicycling is one of the most pleasant, efficient and fun ways to get around Chicago. By the end of 2004 Chicago will have more than 150 miles of bike lanes.

Halsted Street in Lakeview, also known as “the strip” in Chicago’s officially designated LGBT neighborhood, will soon be striped with bike lanes.
