Chicago’s public transportation system should take care of most of your transportation needs, and make for an enjoyable and hassle-free visit. The Sports Villages and most major Gay Games activities are located on the rapid transit grid, so we encourage visitors to avoid the sometimes congested urban driving and parking experience, and opt for relaxed travel on public transportation.
However if you do rent a car, it's easy to find your way around in Chicago. House numbers increase in four directions from around a central point in the Loop -- State and Madison Streets. Madison Street divides the city into north and south; State Street divides the city into east and west. With only two numbers -- one for east/west, one for north/south -- you can easily find any location in the city. North and South and University Sports Villages will have campus parking. The Lakefront Sports Village and Gay Games Hub will have the most difficult parking. In downtown, the Grant Park underground garage offers the least expensive parking rates. Further north, the North Avenue Beach, Belmont Harbor, and Foster Avenue Beach have small parking lots. Arrive early before lots fill up.
For international visitors, please note that you will need to have a driver's license at all times, and that we drive on the right side of the road, with the steering columns on the left. Also, we use miles per hour to measure speed, and gallons for gasoline.
