Bicycle

Bicycling is one of the most pleasant, efficient and fun ways to get around Chicago. By the end of 2004 Chicago will have more than 150 miles of bike lanes. Thanks to the vision of the world renowned Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, our bike friendly mayor, and the efforts of dozens of organizations and individuals, Chicago consistently wins Bicycling Magazine’s award for “Best Large City in North America for Bicycling.”

Halsted Street in Lakeview, also known as “the strip” in Chicago’s officially designated LGBT neighborhood, will soon be striped with bike lanes. Credit is due to openly gay city alderman Tom Tunney, and the LGTB Windy City Cycling Club who worked closely with the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation to make “Boystown” more bike friendly than ever.

The city’s famous 29-mile lakefront bike path connects the Lakefront Sports village with the Hub and the South Sports Village. A revolutionary $3.1 million Bike Station is currently being constructed, just steps away from Gay Games medal ceremonies and the site of our band and choral concerts. The University Sports Village is easily accessible via a dedicate bike lane on Roosevelt Road. And a leisurely ride to the North Sports village will take you through some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city. For both opening and closing ceremonies, cycling is sure to be the fastest method of transportation. There are 1,500 bike racks throughout the city to which you can lock your bike.

Bike friendly directions to each venue, along with a map of the city’s bike lanes will be available to all participants at accreditation. For more information about bicycling in Chicago visit the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation’s website.
