PERFORMERS GET IN YOUR FACE WITH DANCE-THEATER PIECES AT THE CHICAGO CULTURAL CENTER
Matthew Hollis, Karim Tonsy and ¡Salsation! Celebrate Gay Games VII July 21
The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs presents In Your Face, an evening of short works featuring sketch comedy by ¡Salsation! and dance theater pieces by Matthew Hollis and Karim Tonsy, on Friday July 21 at 8pm in the Chicago Cultural Center’s Claudia Cassidy Theater, 78 E. Washington St. Admission is free. This program replaces the previously scheduled performance by Mexico’s La Cebra Dance Company, now cancelled.
Award-winning Italian-Egyptian choreographer and dancer Karim Tonsy will present Cult, Writing on Water (Nature vs. Being.) This piece evokes the question of how things would be if the beginning of being was Adam and Adam and not Adam and Eve. This dance theater improvisation uses raw and primitive movement elements connecting water, mud and clay to know, touch and explore, with a focus on the body and not the mind.
Chicago’s first and only Latino comedy ensemble ¡Salsation! will perform gay themed sketches (including the musical "Scarface") from their latest revue "The Fanta Menance," which attacks gentrification, assimilation, and commercialization of the Hispanic identity. ¡Salsation! has produced a number or full-length sketch comedy reviews including "Touched by an Anglo", "Veracruz" and "My Big Fat Quinceañera."
Using a chain of unfortunate events and the fundamentals of cheerleading, Matthew Hollis assembles a squad to spread his message of unbridled optimism in "The Power of Cheer." His work has been described as "sketch comedy that moves," "performance art," and "dance theater." "The Power of Cheer" is a series of tools to achieve a beautiful life and urges audience members to find and foster their own personal cheer.
This event is presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs in conjunction with Gay Games VII. The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Gay Games VII will present a week of music, visual art exhibitions, films and performances by gay, lesbian bisexual and transgendered artists and arts organizations in the Chicago Cultural Center and other DCA venues. Opening Reception for the artist on Friday, July 14, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
Born in Oak Park, Tom Bianchi received a law degree from Northwestern University. After spending time as a lawyer for Winston & Strawn and Columbia Pictures, Bianchi tore up his law degree and became an artist—one of his first pieces incorporated remnants of his law degree. Bianchi’s earliest works were high-relief wall sculptures that referenced elements of architecture and landscape. Since the early 90’s, Bianchi has focused on photography, capturing the classic male nude in stunningly beautiful poses. Bianchi’s photographs explore sexual energy and, occasionally, the issue of art versus pornography.
Tom Bianchi’s photography books include In Defense of Beauty (1995), In the Studio (1999), and the two-volume edition of On the Couch (2002 & 2004). The artist lives and works in Palm Springs, California.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, and Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, or by appointment. For further information, please contact Sarah Kaliski or Lindsey Walton at 312.440.0770.

For seven years, About Face has created its most powerful, innovative, and celebrated work in collaboration with Chicago's extraordinary community of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trangender) young people. Our audience jumps to its feet in joyful recognition each season at the curtain call of the Youth Theatre production.
This year, About Face is proud to premiere the most powerful Youth Theatre production yet -- The Home Project.
Based on interviews with hundreds of LGBT youth about their experiences with home and homelessness, The Home Project is filled with astonishing, disturbing, and ultimately triumphant stories of young people who struggle to create a perfect society while battling complacency, violence, and apathy. It is the most thrilling, exciting, and important new play to emerge from the talented adult artists and young people of the nationally celebrated About Face Youth Theatre.
June 15th Through July 23rd - Thursday through Saturday at 7:30p.m. Sundays at 6p.m.
Jim Provenzano's electrifying novel about two high school wrestlers coming of age is brought to exciting life on-stage as Bailiwick celebrates Chicago's Gay Games!
PINS is a compelling story of loving peer pressure, supportive yet confused families, and the mad tangle of emotions set against the backdrop of competitive high school wrestling.
Jeffrey, a gay actor/waiter has sworn off sex after too many bouts with his partners about what is "safe" and what is not. In gay New York, though, sex is not something you can avoid. Just after he's reconciled himself to celibacy, Jeffrey's flamboyant friends introduce him to the man of his dreams, who also happens to be HIV-positive. What follows is a moving and audacious romantic comedy with a difference- one in which the quest for love and really fabulous clothes meet, and where unflagging humor prevails even when tragedy might be just around the corner.
In honor of the Gay Games, Live Bait Theater celebrates all things gay in July by inviting three fabulous gay solo artists to perform individual hour - long works.
Live Bait remounts Joe Steiff’s hit solo show Golden Corral (directed by Brigid Murphy) about growing up gay in rural Appalachia; Brian Lobel’s Other Funny Stories About Cancer (Directed by Margot Bordelon) dives into the worlds of youth mentoring, queer identities, virginity and mortality; and finally, Nothing Left but the Smell: A Republican on Welfare by pseudo-San Franciscan, Erika Lopez.
Known for her successful philosophical/bad-sex/motorcycle novel, Flaming Iguanas and The Trilogy of Tomatoes. Lopez had it all and threw it all away. This show is about her more recent adventure of standing in the welfare line.
